From The Desk of VDG Fred
Renkema
Vice District Governor
It’s great to be a lion and have the ability to serve others. Lion
Rita and I visited the Lions World Service for the Blind in Little
Rock, Arkansas in August. This Lions entity that we support is where
we teach blind people how to be self sufficient and how to learn to
select a vocation so that they can support themselves. These blind
people learn vocations like computer programming, computer
technology, small engine repair and many other vocations. Once they
complete their studies, they leave and go to a job in which they
have been trained to do. Let’s keep up the support for LWSB.
Lion Rita and I traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the USA/ Canada Lions
Leadership Forum in September. The VDG’s were invited to hear about
the Quest Program that is sponsored by LCI. This program is designed
to be in our schools and provides much direction and socialization
for children in all grades. We also received a lot of training in
all areas of Lionism. I will be sharing this information with all
the Lions in the district so that we can use it to better serve
those in need.
We need to have each club look at their purpose and evaluate their
goals. We need to recruit people into our clubs and give them a
purpose for being in the club. Lets make our meetings fun and with a
purpose.
I’m proud to be a part of the world’s largest service organization.
Lions Clubs International President Jimmy Ross says that all clubs
need to change. Change is good. We need to grow and attract younger
people and families, have fun, fellowship and do fundraisers that
are fun and productive.
Keep doing the great work that you are doing in your clubs and we
will see you at the District Cabinet Meeting in October.
VDG Fred Renkema

IMPORTANT NOTICE from Lions Clubs International:
Effective July 1, 2007, any club that has past due balances in
excess of US$20 per member or US$1,000 per club which ever is
less, outstanding past 150 days will be automatically suspended,
including the charter, rights, privileges, and obligations of
the Lions Club for a period not to exceed 90 days. During this
time, the club must pay the entire amount billed to the club
before the suspension status is lifted. If the club does not pay
this amount in 90 days, the club will be automatically canceled.
This is critical, because clubs with one per-capita billing
outstanding 150 days or longer can be suspended. This new ruling
is very aggressive; clubs may avoid loosing their good status if
poor payment trends are immediately addressed. Clubs are
encouraged to pay their full past due balances, regardless of
amount, to ensure the club remains in good standing. |

Lions Eye Bank of Texas Mobile Screening Unit
The Lions Eye Bank of Texas is proud to
announce the availability of its Mobile Screening Unit for use at
vision screenings throughout the four districts that support the eye
bank – Districts 2-S1, 2-S2, 2-S4 and 2-A3. The Mobile Screening Unit
includes a full optic lane for conducting vision screenings as well as
a supply of recycled eyeglasses from the Texas Lions Eyeglass
Recycling Center in Midland, Texas.
Guidelines for use of the Mobile Screening Unit require a team of
volunteers who are trained to use the equipment. Districts 2-S1, 2-S2
and 2-A3 have trained volunteer teams that are available to assist
with screenings. These teams can also work with Lions interested in
being trained to use the equipment. Other requirements for use include
arranging for the transport of the unit and having a licensed
professional on-site during all screenings.
Any club wishing to reserve the Mobile Screening Unit should complete
a request form and return it to Alicen Swift at the Lions Eye Bank of
Texas. The request form is available via e-mail. All requests will be
acknowledged in writing upon receipt. For more information, please
contact Alicen Swift at 713-798-5545 or by e-mail at alswift@bcm.edu. |

Campaign SightFirst II
|
Fellow Lions, this is an
exciting time for our association. At no time in our history
has Lions’ role as “Knights of the Blind” been more important.
Since 1990, our SightFirst program has made it possible to
save the sight of more than 27 million people. As you know, we
cannot continue to fund these programs without Campaign
SightFirst II, and without SightFirst, the world’s blind
population could double by 2020.
I thank you on behalf of those we hope to serve and Lions
everywhere for all that you do for the success of Campaign
SightFirst II. It is because of the contributions that you
have made and will continue to make to the campaign that will
allow SightFirst to continue. Even in an association as large
as ours, an individual can make an impact. Your work setting
goals with 2006-2007 clubs in preparation for our October 11th
Worldwide Report Day is critical to our success. Just as you
make a difference in the work that you do for Campaign
SightFirst II, one club can also make a difference by:
|
- Becoming a
Model Club – Already 1,220 clubs have decided to “lead the
way” in CSFII. Invite your clubs to “accept the challenge”
by becoming a Model Club this year.
- Raising
funds today – By raising funds today, clubs will inspire
other Lions to action, provide additional momentum to the
campaign and enable SightFirst programs to save the sight of
those we hope to help.
- Increasing
your group’s per-member average – Each Lions club will have
unique fund-raising potential. We need our best clubs to
excel, as we know that some clubs will raise little or set
modest goals. One club can lead the way for their fellow
Lions.
The time to
act in the fight against blindness is now. Go out and find
those inspirational clubs that can make a difference. With
your help, Lions have the “Power to Change the World.”
Yours in Lionism,
Jimmy M. Ross

Family Membership
Initiative
Family Membership
Lions Clubs International announces the Family Membership Dues Rate.
This new membership initiative is an exciting opportunity for Lions to
welcome and expand services to their community. With family members as
the main focus, Lions Clubs International offers not only a reduced
dues rate to its members, it also presents special programs,
activities and opportunities for families. The Family Membership Dues
rate begins on January 1, 2007, for those Lions who are certified as
family members by November 30, 2006. Read below for more information
on how your family can utilize the Family Membership Dues Rate.

Women's Development &
Participation Women
have been members of Lions Clubs since 1987. What a great
honor for us women. (We didn't get to vote until 1920.)
Women's progress has been a gradual one, becoming more marked
as both men and women learned that one could not advance far
without the other.
In the 55 clubs in District 2-S1, the percentage of women to
men is less than 19%. Our clubs have a great potential for
growth by looking for men and women who truly recognize the
need to serve their communities and the world.
Most women are organized, understand the needs of others and
will work hard to see those needs met.
It is our hope that clubs in our district will see women's
participation in Lionism as a way to expand their service to
others.
Through Lions Services for Children Programs, we women would
dedicate our time in helping children in need.
We urge the men to invite their spouses to join their clubs
and women to invite their women friends to join our
organization.
As our International President Jimmy Ross said, "Not only do
we work miracles the world over and bring the gift of sight,
we make it possible for members of our clubs to become better
citizens."

Message From International President Jimmy Ross
Greetings! I'm writing to you this month about exciting public
relations tools available from LCI and about our new disaster
preparedness initiative - the Lions Alert Program. These are two vital
tools you can use to increase your club's visibility in the community.
First, the best source for generating positive PR in your community is
to be sure your club's projects and accomplishments are covered in the
local newspaper. But to do this effectively, your club should be using
professionally-formatted press releases to make it easier for
reporters to cover your story. LCI now has a range of press releases
(found on the LCI website) that can help your club properly promote
its events, service projects, fundraisers, and most importantly, its
accomplishments in serving the community.
In addition to press releases, the LCI web site now also features the
Lions News Network (LNN) where you can download a number of Lions
Public Service Announcements, including the newest one featuring
Former U.S. President -- and Lion -- Jimmy Carter promoting the
accomplishments of SightFirst. I know you will be impressed and proud
when you see these world-class PR and communication tools now
available to your club.
Generating press coverage of your club's accomplishments is also
important for our own needs as members. When Lions see their
accomplishments in the local paper, they are proud about the positive
image such stories create. And it also validates a Lion's primary
reason for being part of this great organization of ours - to serve
and to make a difference in the lives of others.
Now, the gift of service Lions provide to their community, and around
the world, is never more visible then when we respond to disasters,
whether it's a local fire or something as catastrophic as a large-sale
tsunami or hurricane.
This year, to further strengthen our ability to respond to disasters,
the Lions Alert Program has been introduced. The program not only
provides guidelines for how to develop a disaster response
preparedness plan, but its companion web site allows clubs and
districts to request assistance from, or offer assistance to, other
Lions who are nearby or halfway across the world. This
Lion-helping-Lion network is part of our new Lions Serving Humanity
online database. I'm extremely excited about this new initiative and
encourage you to learn about it.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/alert_program.shtml#
Below are more links to on-line resources and important information
for your club. I'll be writing you again next month, and in the
meantime, please share with me your success stories with PR and any
suggestions you have regarding the Lions Alert Program. I would enjoy
hearing from you.
Sincerely
Lion Jimmy Ross
International President

Lions Environment Program
The Lions environment program was adopted in 1972 and clubs continue
to organize projects that preserve the air, water and land. Each club
in District 2S-1 needs to discuss at their meetings some environmental
project that can be done in the community. Examples are: 1. select a
park, school or public site and, with proper permission, plant some
trees and maintain them until they are established, 2. clean up a
roadside, park or public area, 3. get involved in recycling programs
involving paper, aluminum, glass or plaster.
I wish to adopt a program started by the Onalaska Lioness Club for the
district. This is the collection of aluminum pull tabs. I wish to
collect them for the Ronald McDonald House in support of needy
diabetic children. You can bring the tabs to our district cabinet
meetings and I will get them to the proper place.
Also, I would like to know of any environmental project you have been
involved in or start up.

The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone
here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and
hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play
together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our
friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health
and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong
again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times
gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small
thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be
left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one
suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are
intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he begins to run
from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him
faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend
finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be
part again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again
caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting
eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent
from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together…
