Lions clubs get creative in CSFII fund raising As clubs around the
world conduct their intensive fund-raising efforts for Campaign
SightFirst II, some clubs are using their traditional fundraisers,
while others are creating new fundraisers. Click the link below to

CSFII By the Numbers:
· More than US$51.5 million raised by Lions toward US$150 million goal
to continue SightFirst programs
· Nearly 7,000 group coordinators working with clubs around the world

Lions Clubs
International Foundation
Dear Fellow Lion,
I would like to update you on several LCIF initiatives, including
recent SightFirst activity, new public relations tools designed to
promote the work of Lions around the world and LCIF’s continuing
involvement following Hurricane Katrina.
Our SightFirst program continues to better the lives of millions
of individuals by improving and often saving their vision. I
am happy to report that at their August meeting, the SightFirst
Advisory Committee approved a total of US$2.9 million in grants.
The number of countries to receive SightFirst funding also
increased to 90 with the recent addition of Niger in West Africa.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lcif_sfgrantsaug2006.shtml
LCIF recently released a series of public service announcements (PSAs)
featuring former U.S. President—and Lion—Jimmy Carter. The PSAs
promote Lions’ efforts to save 37 million people around the world
from preventable blindness through Campaign SightFirst II (CSFII).
Since
launching the Campaign in July 2005, Lions have raised US$48
million toward our minimum goal of US$150 million. President
Carter’s endorsement of CSFII is part of his ongoing work with
Lions Clubs International.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lnn/psa.html#anchor-carter
President Carter’s PSAs were recently distributed to 400
public-affairs directors and to cable and independent stations in
the top 20 markets across the United States. Please share the PSAs
with fellow Lions and your local television and radio stations.
The PSAs are available to download online and can also be viewed
in the second edition of Lions Quarterly (LQ), a new online video
magazine.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lnn/psa.html
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lnn/lq.html
Also within the second edition of LQ are several LCIF grant
projects, including an update on tsunami rebuilding in Asia,
accomplishments of a Lions Eye Hospital in India and a look at a
camp for visually impaired and blind children in North Carolina,
USA, through the eyes of the
campers. The program can be viewed online or DVD copies can be
requested by e-mailing the PR Department (pr@lionsclubs.org).
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lnn/lq.html
It has been just over a year since Hurricane Katrina devastated
the Gulf Coast region, and Lions are an important part of the
recovery. A total of US$4.5 million in designated funding has
been received at LCIF in support of disaster relief efforts for
Hurricane Katrina. Immediately following the hurricane, LCIF
awarded a US$200,000 Major Catastrophe Grant and US$150,000 in
emergency grants for immediate relief in affected districts.
Numerous additional grants have recently
been awarded to assist with relief and reconstruction projects in
the region.
http://www.lions-katrina.org/what_lions_are_doing.php
In the second year following the disaster, Lions are now shifting
their focus on rebuilding for the future. Lions in the affected
areas are further investigating long-term project possibilities
and matching funding program opportunities. The Hurricane Katrina
Steering Committee plans to meet again at the end of the year to
review their funding proposals.
I encourage you to take a look at the LCIF Web site, which has
some new information and resources available to assist with local
public relations efforts. The new PR tools section has information
to assist you in your efforts to publicize your club and LCIF
grant projects in order to increase public awareness and support
of Lions and LCIF. The new sample releases can be quickly
customized to include specific information on your club and sent
to local media. This section also contains news releases,
downloadable publications and audiovisual presentations. Please
continue to check this section, as more material will be added in
the coming months to better assist you in your PR efforts.
I thank you for your continued support of the Foundation. Your
support is integral to what we can accomplish together this year
and in the future.

Family Membership
Lions Clubs International announces the Family Membership Dues Rate.
This new membership initiative is an exciting opportunity for Lions to
welcome and expand services to their community. With family members as
the main focus, Lions Clubs International offers not only a reduced
dues rate to its members, it also presents special programs,
activities and opportunities for families. The Family Membership Dues
rate begins on January 1, 2007, for those Lions who are certified as
family members by November 30, 2006. Read below for more information
on how your family can utilize the Family Membership Dues Rate.

Texas Lions Camp
Directors Report
It is never too early to start looking for campers for the
2007 camping year. We are again trying to arrange for
affordable bus transportation for campers wanting to attend
Session V (July 2 thru July 7). Applications may be sent to
the camp as early as January 15, 2007. Applications can be
downloaded from the camp web site (www.lionscamp.com)
or by contacting one of your directors. Remember that diabetic
sessions fill up fast (only filled sessions last year), so
stress to parents that those applications need to be in as
soon as possible. Diabetic sessions are July 22nd and July
27th.
The Camp staff will also be recruiting summer staff help at
Lamar, SFASU and Sam Houston during the month of February, if
you know of any college student that may by looking for a
summer job contact the camp and interviews can be scheduled
during these recruiting trips.
A operating budget of $1,850,000 was approved for this coming
year. Our $18 per year dues only covers about 40% of this
budget. The remainder of this budget is made up from 100% club
donations, Century club memberships, Life member donations,
Memorials and donations from clubs and non lions. Consider now
making your club a 100% donor ($10 per member), you becoming a
Century club donor ($100 a year or $10 per month bank draft)
or rewarding members of your club with awards from the camp
(Life membership, Brick, Jack Weich Fellowship or Honorarium).
The camp sessions dates for 2007 are posted on “www.lionscamp.com”

The Pineywoods
Purgatory
There
have been a few brief discussions on the actual anniversary of the
ride. When an event is canceled due to a major hurricane do you still
count that year? In any event, the 15th or 16th annual Pineywoods
Purgatory was blessed with perfect cycling weather. As a result of the
weather and months of planning, 500 serious bike riders pumped the
hills of East Texas. Several filled out surveys on our ride and with
the exception of some loose dogs in the country, all gave very
favorable comments. Many were repeat riders from prior years; all were
very courteous and thankful for the efforts in the organization of the
ride. I counted over 60 Lions that helped with this year’s ride. And
the best part is we pulled out of the hole last year’s canceled ride
created. We have enough money to start next year’s ride and make a
donation. “We Serve”
A big at-a-boy goes to Chairman, Ben Moore and Co-Chair, Jim West for
their leadership and experience which kept us on track throughout the
planning stages. We would be lost without these guys. The planning
starts with our sponsors, without them we would have limited success.
This year’s sponsors were Temple Inland, Brookshire Brothers, First
Bank & Trust East Texas, Abitibi, Polk Oil, Jody Anderson Campaign,
Bancorp South, State Farm-Jay Jackson, Langston Construction,
Southwest Securities, Advanced Financial, Moore Building Associates,
and St. Giles.
Another in-valuable service was provided by the Deep East Texas
Amateur Radio Club, who had 18 members provide ham radio service
throughout the ride. These guys were very helpful to our sags because
there were sections of the ride without cell service. Thanks to the
2006 sag wagon grew of Lions Gerald Crump, Mark Wiedenfeld, Richard
Collmorgen, Phillip Goodwin, Scott Davis, Jamie Davis, Joe Hancock,
Matt Ellis, Richard Kenner, Randy Baker, and Jody Anderson.
Much of the positive feedback was for the friendly rest stops; this is
one area that separates our ride from the others. Nathan Gann was the
rest stop chairman and he worked his magic and assembled 10
organizations and businesses to help. They were Lufkin Convention and
Visitors Bureau, Holiday Inn / Comfort Suites / Hampton Inn & Suites,
Consolidated Communications, Shiners’ and Alto Lions Club, the Parise
Family, Gann Medford Reality, Extreme Sports Missions, Angelina
Savings, Angelina Bike Club, and the TXDOT/ Stubblefield Learning
Center.
The
Lions whose culinary skills included preparation of a spaghetti dinner
with all the trimmings on Friday night and fajitas all day Saturday
were headed up by Lion Shawn Kaemmerling. Shawn is quick to thank his
mentor and procurement specialist Lion Jim Roper. Not listed
individually, but not forgotten, is a long list of meat cutters, pit
specialists, and food line ram-rods all worked under the watchful eye
of longtime bike ride volunteer Lion Ralph Valone.
Prior to the ride, course markers had to paint directional arrows
along the routes. Security had to be hired and assigned a location.
All the little details factor into the quality of the ride. I hope by
now you realize there is a lot that goes into a successful ride along
with the blessing of ideal East Texas weather.
By the way, a little research has determined that when an event is
planned and is canceled at the last minute you still count that year.
So thanks to everyone that helped make the 16th Annual Pineywoods
Purgatory a success.

Texas Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Center
(TLERC)
International
President Jimmy Ross has declared as a goal that all preventable
blindness in the world be eradicated. In order to help reach this
goal, Lions are asked to quadruple the amount of recycled eyeglasses
collected.
Lion
Jennie and I were very fortunate to attend the Texas Lions Eyeglasses
Recycling Center (TLERC) orientation of presenters on September 23, to
learn how to increase the number of eyeglasses collected as well as
seeing the facilities and its operation. It wasreally an eye-opening
experience. It's difficult to express the size and scope of the
operation of this facility.
The
class was informative and well presented by PDG Ike Fitzgerald, TLERC
Coordinator and Lion Aubrey Linne, Operations Manager. The operation
of the center is very well organized -- from receiving the glasses to
shipping them. The glasses are sorted in general categories
(children's, sun glasses, discarded broken glasses, etc.) and then are
washed and dried. From there, they are measured for strength and size,
marked and are categorized respectively. The boxes of glasses are
stored in a large warehouse adjoining the two-storied brick office
building until shipped.
Our
goal is to keep the center supplied with enough glasses to meet the
need. At the District 2S-1 Second Cabinet meeting, a TLERC Forum was
held and the challenge we have to meet IP Jimmy Ross's goal. The
attendance was great and well received. A special thanks goes to PDG
Moe Culley for facilitating this forum. |

Presidential Leadership Medal Awarded
The concept behind the PLUS ONE Program was the idea that each and
every member can make a significant contribution to their
community, even a small incremental gain of one member per club
and one club per district can achieve great results.
The PLUS ONE Program was a success as the International
Association brought in 122,845 new members in now 200 countries
and geographical territories, each with a Passion to Serve and a
pledge to help the less fortunate. Lions Clubs Association was
able to charter 1,092 new clubs, each with a promise of serving
their communities for years to come.
These achievements were accomplished as a result of leaders like
Lion J. D. Miller of the Jasper Lions Club, who committed himself
to the membership growth and to the future of our association. It
was Lions such as Lion J. D. Miller through his dedication that
helped IPDG Penny Gregrich in chartering District 2-S1 newest club
of Burkeville-Toledo Bend with his untiring efforts to see that
this club became a reality.
Through the efforts of Lion J. D. Miller, our District 2-S1 was
able to achieve the Five Star Awards of the International
Presidents Ashok Mehta’s Award Program. This award program has and
will provide special recognition to several Lions who played a key
role in this distinction of becoming a Five Star District. More
presentations will be awarded as the awards are received by IPDG
Penny Gregrich.
Only twenty-eight districts in the world received this distinction
and there is only one other Five Star District in Texas. This is
certainly a cause for celebration as we commemorated this occasion
with the presentation of the prestigious International Leadership
Medal to Lion J. D. Miller. It was presented on behalf of Lion
Penny Gregrich as District Governor for 2005-06 by Past Council
Chairman Dick Robinson who was our guest speaker at the Second
Cabinet Meeting held in Beaumont on October 21, 2006.
Congratulations to Lion J. D. Miller of the Jasper Lions Club.

hamburgers, and parade led by the High School band. Game booths
were operated by local youth groups ( 4-H, Cheerleaders, Project

has taught himself to play. He has won numerous awards and many
doors are opening up for him in the music world. We are very proud
of him. Everyone is invited to the Open House of our newly
remodeled Community House. It will be held September 30 from 2-4 I
will tell you more about it later. We will be having our Fish Fry
