Dr Bonita Lowrie
District Governor
|
As incoming District Governors,
we were told that the year 2006-2007 would be all too fleeting.
Before the January issue of "The Lion's Share" goes on-line, we
will have reached the mid-point of this year in Lionism.
This is a good time for clubs to reflect on their Re-dedication
to the Lions motto "We Serve" and their meaningful involvement
that truly makes a difference in the lives of others.
Region Chairs, Zone Chairs, Club Presidents and Secretaries are
encouraged to review the check list received at the First
Cabinet Meeting. Be a DreamCatcher!
Information has been on-line with LCI for all club secretaries
to meet the November 30 deadline for Family Certification.
January 1, 2007 the Family Initiative will be launched
internationally. PDG Moe Cully is doing ground work in the
Golden Triangle with the prospects of three Family Clubs.
Enthusiasm continues to mount to meet the challenge to quadruple
the collection of used eyeglasses for Texas Lions Eyeglasses
Recycling Center. This is being spearheaded by Lion Pat Brady,
representative for the southern part of the district appointed
by VDG Fred Renkema.
A significant number of Lions has become Interested in attending
the Vision Screening training in Midland held the third Saturday
of each month.
Clubs implementing the Club Renewal Initiative find it to be a
simple but powerful three-step process. In order to receive a
Club Renewal Initiative Banner, club secretaries need to submit
the results on-line at
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN.
Mid-Winter Conference will be Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the
Woodville Lions Den. Immediately following the conference, MD-2
Membership and Extension Chairs PDG's Aubrey and Frances Cherry
(El Paso) will conduct an Emerging Lions Leadership Seminar
(1:30 PM - 3:00 PM). Each club is encouraged to send at least
two representatives. Mark your calendar and make plans to
attend. Registration information will be forthcoming.
Please continue collecting pull tabs and bring them to fill the
five-gallon Challenge Jugs. Tabs for Tots will benefit children
with diabetes at the Ronald McDonald House according to District
Environment Chair Gerry Peacock.
Invite District Committee Chairs for the charities to give a
club program. Campaign SightFirst II is half over and we have
much yet to do in Texas.
The question this year is, "As your district governor, how can I
best serve your club?" It has been my privilege to participate
in a wide array of club activities including community service
projects, fund raisers, installation of officers, induction of
new members, presentation of awards, club celebrations,
unofficial guest as well as traditional District Governor's
official club visits.
Re-fuel! Re-group! Re-focus! Re-vitalize! Get ready to hit the
ground running with Re-newed vigor for the next half of the
2006-2007 Year of Lionism as we continue to "Ride for the JR
Brand!

Fred
Renkema
Vice District Governor
We would like to thank everyone for all your thoughts and prayers as
my wife, Lion Rita, is recovering very well at home from Double Knee
Replacement Surgery.
Isn’t it great to be a Lion at this time of the year? The spirit of
giving is exciting as we serve those in need. I attended many of the
2nd Region/Zone meetings and am very excited about what the Lions in
District 2-S1 are doing. There were good reports about bringing new
members into your clubs. Some of the new members even attended the
Region/Zone meetings. We would like to congratulate each of these
new members and keep them excited and encouraged about Lionism.
The clubs have reported about many fundraisers that have been held
and their success in each one of them. Keep up the great work so
that we can use the profits to help those in need. There was
mentioned about the fundraisers in progress and the ones that are
coming up. Good luck on each one.
I’ve attended the Council of Governors meeting that was held in San
Angelo and received a lot of good information and training about
what is happening at the State level in Lionism. We attended the 2nd
District Cabinet Meeting that was held in Beaumont and the 90th
Anniversary Celebration of the Beaumont Founders Lions Club.
We look forward to seeing each of you at the District Mid-Winter
Conference to be held in Woodville on January 19 – 20, 2007. We look
forward to seeing many of you at the Leadership Seminar to be held
on that Saturday afternoon.
I would like to thank Lions Pat and Jeanie Brady for their
leadership in the TLERC program in our district. If any more of you
fellow Lions would like to get the training to do vision screenings,
please contact us so we can get you scheduled. We have the trailer
and the equipment; we just need some trained people to do the
screenings.
Let’s express ourselves as Lions, be visible and “ASK” someone that
you know to join you at your next club meeting. They might be your
guest and your next new member.
YIL and Happy Holidays to ALL

ALERT District Chair
Lion Jimmy Richardson has been appointed as Lion ALERT District Chair.
Lion Jimmy is very qualified to hold this position. Lion Jimmy is a
member of a disaster relief team affiliated with the Texas Baptist
Men. He has taken a Red Cross course called Introduction to a Disaster
Sycs and was certified with TBM through their disaster course. He has
worked in disaster relief in AL, FL, MI, LA, and TX. He has also
worked with food preparation, food serving, and chainsaw work.
Lion Jimmy Richardson is also a Christian, so with all of these
qualifications rolled into one man, or should I say a Lion willing to
serve, he is well qualified to do this job.

Puppy Tails
Is
this the face of a “perfect puppy” or a “discize” for a “little
devil”?
Let’s see: As a general rule, if we travel for more than 1 ½, we put a
baby’s crib mattress in the back seat with our required supplies or
our suite cases under it in the leg wells for stabilization. On our
way to the USA/Canada Forum in Columbus, Ohio, just 1 hour outside of
the Texas border, this “little darling” got bored. So she started
chewing on the armrest to our IPP to our Texas Lions Camp. This
wonderful Lion did not see the humorous side to this act. For 2 ½
hours very little was even said………
On our return trip, she ate the corner off the road map AND the handle
strap to my umbrella. After the armrest, I was trying to watch her
closer. As a matter of fact, she was on my feet in the front with me
when she ate the map and umbrella!
2 ½ months later and Hal has not fixed the armrest. He is getting all
the mileage he can out of it. Hal puts up with so much, I think the
mileage will last until I return
Ivy Green #7.
This is a true story.

Leader Dog Note
At
some fabric shops, you will find a 1 inch Leader Dogs for the
Blind Button. The button is a lab puppy, sitting with a blue neck
scarf on. The button is made by "Creative Buttons by JHB
International". It has a stock number of 20089, and I believe that
the price per button is $2.50.
On the card it says, "A portion of sales proceeds will be donated
to the Leader Dogs for the Blind". This is a fund raiser and the
buttons are NOT available at the Leader Dog school.

Texas Lions Camp
Directors Report
Texas Lions Camp Directors Report for newsletter December 2006
It is time to get applications and information to campers for
the 2007 camping year. Applications may be sent to the camp as
early as January 15, 2007. Applications can be downloaded from
the camp web site (www/lionscamp.com) or by contacting one of
your directors. Remember that diabetic sessions fill up fast
(only filled sessions last year), so stress to parents that
those applications need to be in as soon as possible. Diabetic
sessions are July 22nd and July 27th.
We are again trying to arrange for affordable bus
transportation for campers wanting to attend Session V (July 2
thru July 7).
The Camp staff will also be recruiting summer staff employees
at Lamar, SFASU and Sam Houston during the month of February,
if you know of any college student that may by looking for a
summer job contact the camp and interviews can be scheduled
during these recruiting trips.
From the monthly report from the camp, it shows that our
district is $3000 below the donation level of last year. The
Nacogdoches Evening club needs to be recognized for making a
100% donations for three previous years, they are now listed
as continuous 100% donor for 48 years. Other club of the
district that have a long history of 100% donations to the
camp are Beaumont/Forest Park (42 yr), Center Noon (39 yr),
Jasper Noon (39 yr), Jacksonville (36 yr) and Livingston (34
yr). Consider now making your club a 100% donor ($10 per
member).
The camp sessions dates for 2007 are posted on “lionscamp.com”
Best of holiday wishes to you and your families,
We Serve

Wickersham Charitable Golf Tournament
The Harry Wickersham
Golf Tournament is in its 14th year, and is now a Memorial Tournament
in memory of Harry Wickersham. Since it began, the tournament has been
a tremendous time of fun and fellowship, and by the way, has raised
$283,000 now for the Camp's Operations and Endowment Funds.
The 2006 Tournament was a huge success and raised $53,641.00 for the
children of Texas Lions Camp. Many people came together to make this
happen, but the tournament directors, Mac & Mary McCown, now have the
distinction of having managed the most successful tournament in TLC
history.
Tournament - 2007
The 2007 tournament will be held at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course in
Fredericksburg, Texas. As in prior years. The Tourney will "shotgun
start" at 8:00 a.m. on the Thursday prior to Board Day, or August 2,
2007.

Certified Guiding Lion Program
The Certified Guiding Lion program has proven to be an effective tool
for new club development. The course, which is available to any active
Lion member, may be taken individually at one's own pace or as a
course given by a facilitator. After completion of the course, the
Lion should meet with his or her District Governor, who will go over
the Certified Guiding Lion Course Review, a booklet completed by the
Lion. After the District Governor has signed the Review, the Review
should be forwarded to the New Clubs and Marketing Department. Upon
receiving the completed Review, the New Clubs and Marketing Department
will mail the Lion a special certificate noting the Lion's achievement
as a Certified Guiding Lion.
The comprehensive course provides insight of the skills needed to be a
successful Guiding Lion and acquaints the participant with detailed
knowledge of new club management, the roles and responsibilities of
new club officers, how to create a membership recruiting plan, and
"Making It Happen," Guide to Club Project Development. The course
material includes a suggested timeframe that outlines activities that
the club should achieve over the club's first two years.

The MD-2 Texas Lions organization is
pleased to announce the 2006-2007 “Lions Pride” award recognizing
Lions Clubs and media organizations in Texas who are actively
informing the public about the Lions of Texas and the humanitarian
service they provide.
“Lions Club members are ordinary persons providing extraordinary
service to others each day. It is important to share stories of
community service and our ‘We Serve’ spirit with the public. MD-2
wants to recognize clubs and media organizations that are doing that,”
says State Public Relations Chairman PDG Carmon McCain of Lubbock.
There are two categories for this award: Lions Clubs and media
organizations. All clubs are invited to submit a sample of their best
public relations efforts for consideration. In addition, clubs may
also nominate a reporter, editor, or media organization for the award,
says McCain. Entries must be produced between July 1, 2006 and April
30, 2007.
Entries should be accompanied by an entry form and must be received by
the May 1, 2007 deadline. Paid advertising is not eligible. Winners
will be announced on or before May 15, 2007. Awards will be presented
at the MD-2 Texas Lions State Convention in Arlington, June 7-9, 2007.
Previous winners include the Floresville Lions, Iowa Park Evening
Lions, Corsicana Sunset Lions, Greenville Lions, Kerrville Host Lions,
Cleburne Lions, Converse Lions, Houston Sports Lions, Gonzales Lions,
Plano New Millennium Lions, Dallas Oak Cliff Lions, Pearland Lions,
Lubbock Lions, Lubbock Hub Lions, and MD-2 District Governors.
Media organizations recognized include Cleburne Times-Review; KCLE
Radio, Cleburne; Azle News; Cleburne Eagle-News; and Elaine Kolodziej,
Wilson County News.
“Some of the winning entries have included feature articles about
clubs and their projects, promotional videos, informative radio PSAs,
and club web sites. In addition, some clubs have nominated local media
professionals who have worked to promote the club’s service
activities,” says McCain.

Lions Clubs
International Foundation
LCIF is able to fulfill its mission of
helping Lions serve worldwide through your support. In this message, I
would like to update you on Campaign SightFirst II, grants awarded at
the October Board Meeting, Lions World Sight Day, Melvin Jones
Fellowships and new developments in Lions Quest.
Dedicated Lions have helped raise more than US$53 million to date for
Campaign SightFirst II to continue our fight against preventable
blindness. National and Multi-National Coordinators reported the
fundraising goals of thousands of clubs around the world during
Worldwide Report Day on October 11, and more than 20,000 clubs plan to
raise US$64 million for CSFII this Lions year.
http://www.lions-csfii.org/live/content/index.shtml
http://www.lions-csfii.org/live/content/pdfs/wrd2_newsrelease_en.pdf
These goals leave more than US$35 million to be raised in Lions year
2007-2008 in order to reach CSFII's minimum goal of US$150 million and
more than US$85 million to be raised in 2007-2008 if we are to reach
our challenge goal of US$200 million. Please challenge your club to
set and achieve its fundraising goal. We must succeed so that Lions
can continue the SightFirst program. To date, SightFirst has funded
vision projects that have protected and restored sight to more than
100 million individuals.
At the October Board Meeting, the LCIF Executive Committee approved 75
grants totaling US$3 million . Grants awarded will provide for
international medical missions, expanding Lions Quest programs,
equipping schools and hospitals, and constructing Habitat for Humanity
Homes, to name a few. The full list of approved grants is available
online .
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lcif_gr_standard_recent.shtml
On October 12 Lions around the world marked Lions World Sight Day with
sight-related activities such as eye screenings, cataract surgeries
and vision awareness campaigns. LCIF and Lions Clubs International, in
cooperation with Give the Gift of Sight Foundation, screened
approximately 26,000 children and adults October 10-20 in Bamako ,
Mali . More than 2 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are blind and
the rate of blindness is 10 times that of developing countries. Lions
from Mali , through grant funding from LCIF, will arrange for
additional care such as cataract surgery for those who need it at the
African Institute for Tropical Ophthalmology (IOTA)-the premier eye
hospital and training institute in West Africa .
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lions_lcif_lwsd.shtml
The number of individuals to attain the Foundation's highest donor
honor of Melvin Jones Fellow continues to grow each year. The Melvin
Jones Fellowship is the backbone of LCIF, providing 70 percent of the
foundation's revenue. A recognition of humanitarian work, a MJF is
awarded to those who donate US$1,000 to LCIF or to people for whom a
donation was made by others. Last year alone, 13,300 people became
Melvin Jones Fellows and 7,076 individuals continued their support of
the Foundation by becoming a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellows. Melvin
Jones Fellows receive an attractive lapel pin, a plaque and a
congratulatory letter. Consider recognizing a Lion in your club for
their dedication or individual in the community for their humanitarian
efforts by presenting him or her with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. The
Fellowship can be attained through an installment payment plan, and
donations to Campaign SightFirst II are eligible for MJF recognition.

Lions and LCIF are making a difference in the lives of youths through
Lions Quest , a schools-based life-skills program for young people
from kindergarten to 12th grade. More than 350,000 teachers have been
trained in the program, which is currently taught in about 30
countries, and 11 million children have learned to make responsible
decisions, communicate effectively and avoid drugs through Lions
Quest. A new online training program with background information and
tools for effectively implementing Lions Quest is now available to any
Lion who is interested in learning more about Lions Quest. E-mail
Shmir Corzine , Lions Quest Coordinator, for a log on ID and password
to utilize the newly developed online training course.

Receiving a Leader Dog
(Continued)
Last
Months Issue: John Bruce completed the Orientation & Mobility course
at Leader Dog and returned home to put this education into practice.
Field Representative Carlos Gallusser evaluated John’s skills and John
started his Leader Dog class October 11, 2006. He was issued his dog
“Viggo” and they finished the training at our school.
CURRENTLY: I called John 3 times while he was at the school. The total
class was 23 students of which about 6 students and their interpreter
were from Spain. While attending the class, they wanted to speak as
much English as possible and would “corral” John and other students.
During any typical day, John said they were lucky to get maybe 1 to ½
hours of free time to themselves. John stated that he had never been
so tired in his life.
The Training includes: night traveling skills, escalators, malls,
business entries, a tour of the entire school plus interaction
constantly with the other students and their dogs.
John commented that every time he and Viggo returned to their room,
Viggo would ALWAYS stop at the same door. It was the room that
contained the dog food – “I’m ready Dad”.
To be Continued.
