HAPPY NEW YEAR!
In 2007, District 2-S1 will “Ride like the wind for the
JR Brand!”
To shake the winter doldrums and launch the new year, plan to
attend the Mid-Winter Conference Saturday, January 20, 2007 to
be held at the Woodville Lions Den.
Friday evening, join in the fun, food and fellowship at the
Texas Star Cafe located at 205 North Highway 69 in Colmesneil.
The Dutch Treat Social will be from 6:00 PM around 8:00 PM.
Registration is scheduled Saturday morning from 8:00 to 9:00 AM.
Enjoy this time! Meet and greet fellow Lions while you sip a cup
of hot coffee and savor a doughnut or two or three - depending
on your New Year’s resolutions.
Special guests for Mid-Winter include Alicen Swift, Lions Eye
Bank of Texas (Houston); Past Council Chair Mike Rourke (San
Antonio) and Past District Governors Aubrey and Frances Cherry
(El Paso).
The morning session will begin at 9:00 AM with a mid-morning
break and conclude around 11:45 AM. After a brief break, we will
reconvene at 12 noon for the Leadership Luncheon with PCC Mike
Rourke as the guest speaker. PCC Mike was PDG Doyel Chandler’s
Council Chair.
Immediately following Mid-Winter Conference, the EMERGING LION
LEADERSHIP SEMINAR will be conducted by Past District Governor
Aubrey Cherry, MD-2 Leadership Development Chair, and Past
District Governor Frances Cherry, MD-2 Retention Chair
(El Paso, Texas).
If you have you been a Lion for two to five years and see
yourself as a potential Lion leader, please indicate on your
pre-registration form and make plans to stay for the seminar
which will be from 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM.
District 2-S1 is offering this opportunity for identifying and
nurturing future Cabinet Members including Region and Zone
Chairs, District Committee Chairs, Camp Directors, Vice District
Governors, etc.
The GOAL for the Seminar is to have at least one or two Lions
from each club sign up and participate to enhance leadership
skills.
The Seminar leaders are coming from El Paso. Let’s make it worth
their while! See you in Woodville!
“Leaders don’t create
followers.
They create more leaders.”

White Cane Day 2007
White Cane Day 2007 to be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007. In an
effort to promote this year’s event on a large scale, we are asking
all clubs to participate on the scheduled day, if possible. White Cane
Day gives us a chance to collect much-needed funds for sight
restoration and conservation projects. It also gives the Lions a
chance to meet the public and tell our story.
We encourage you to secure your collection location (Wal-Mart, K-Mart,
grocery store, etc.) in advance of the event, and then make regular
follow-up calls to confirm your reservation. We have found in the past
that as retail managers move from store to store, the new managers
need this information on their calendar.
Please fill out the supply order form and fax to Alicen Swift at the
Lions Eye Bank of Texas at 713-798-6864 by Friday, March 2, 2007. It
is important that all clubs strive to meet this deadline, so we can
make sure enough supplies are ordered and that your supplies get to
you in a timely manner. If you should have any questions, please feel
free to contact me at 713-798-5545 or by e-mail at
alswift@bcm.edu.
White Cane Day contributions allow us to continue donor awareness
programs, community education and sight restoration projects
throughout the year. With your help, this year we will reach our goal
to exceed last year’s collections. If your club is unable to
participate, we encourage you to make a donation to the Lions Eye Bank
of Texas. On behalf of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas, we appreciate your
support of White Cane Day 2006.

ATTENTION CLUB PRESIDENTS:
It is not too early to begin thinking about the process for the
election of club officers for 2007-2008.
The time-line for appointing nomination committees, holding
elections (no later than April 15) and the timely submission of
Club Officers to Lions Clubs International (April 30) is vital to
the smooth transition from the 2006-2007 Year in Lionism to
2007-2008.
Each club president should inform the nomination committee of the
role and responsibilities of each club officer. Especially
critical to the success of the clubs operations is the office of
club secretary, the key liaison with Lions Clubs International.
If a new club secretary is being selected, the nominating
committee needs to consider a Lion who is computer savvy, willing
to attend the club secretary training provided by the district and
committed to keeping the club in good standing by submitting
complete and accurate reports to District 2-S1 and Lions Clubs
International.
If the club secretary selected is continuing in that office, it is
still important that they be willing to attend the club secretary
training. In a computer lab, experienced club secretaries can be
of great assistance to the trainer(s) by working one-on-one with a
novice Lions club secretary.
Go to
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/
content/resources_clubs.shtml
and review the General Procedural Guidelines for Club Elections.
Your leadership as Club President in the election process gives
you yet another opportunity to guide your club to excellence.

Study finds
volunteering at 30-year high
Sun Dec 3, 5:23 PM ET
WASHINGTON - The number of Americans who volunteer to mentor
students, beautify neighborhoods and pitch in after disasters is
at a 30-year high, fueled in part by a boom in teen participation,
a new study says.
The report by the Corporation for National and Community Service
tracked volunteer rates since 1974. It found that more than 1 in 4
adults — or 27 percent — currently give time to their communities,
a jump from a low of 20.4 percent recorded in 1989.
Teens aged 16 to 19 saw the biggest jump, with 28.4 percent
volunteering compared to just 13.4 percent in 1989.
Service among mid-life adults (ages 45 to 64) and senior citizens
(ages 65 and over) also remained strong at 30 percent and 23.5
percent, respectively. The study, which is set to be released
Monday, credits higher education levels, delayed childbearing and
longer life expectancy.
"We are encouraged that emerging studies consistently show
increased volunteering by young Americans. If supported properly,
we may be on the cusp of a new civic generation," said Robert T.
Grimm, director of research and policy development at the
corporation.
The group, which promotes volunteering through federal programs
such as Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America,
attributed increased volunteering among youths to a rise in
service-learning programs in schools and colleges that combine
classroom study with community work.
Increased altruism in response to disasters such as the Sept. 11,
2001, terror attacks also have played a role, according to Grimm.
The report analyzed volunteering rates in 1974, 1989 and
2003-2005, using information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau
and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
It also found:
- More adult volunteers serve through religious organizations
(35.5 percent) than through other types of groups such as
education (24.6 percent).
- Baby boomers are volunteering in greater numbers, accounting for
a 37 percent increase in participation among mid-life adults since
1989.
- Older adults tend to volunteer more intensively, serving 100 or
more hours a year. In contrast, most teens (67.9 percent)
contribute more sporadically, amounting to 99 or fewer hours a
year.
"America needs more volunteers to mentor and tutor at-risk youth,
care for seniors, respond to disasters and meet a wide range of
other critical needs," said David Eisner, CEO of the organization.

meeting in Woodville on January 20th or you can down load the
forms from the camp web site;
www.lionscamp.com
Those lions that are interested in working or volunteering at
the camp during the summer must also complete and employment
application. The applications can also be found on the web
site or contact the camp at 830-896-8500 and they will mail
you a packet.
Any Lions wanting to take part in a “work day” at the camp
need to contact the camp and reserve a spot, they have a
limited number of bunks and must plan ahead for the meals.
We are again trying to arrange for affordable bus
transportation for campers wanting to attend Session V (July 2
thru July 7).
The Camp staff will also be recruiting summer staff at Lamar,
SFASU and Sam Houston during the month of February, if you
know of any college student that may by looking for a summer
job contact the camp and interviews can be scheduled during
these recruiting trips.
An operating budget of $1,850,000 was approved for this coming
year. Our $18 per year dues only covers about 40% of this
budget. The remainder of this budget is made up from 100% club
donations, Century club memberships, Life member donations,
Memorials and donations from clubs and non lions. Consider now
making your club a 100% donor ($10 per member), you becoming a
Century club donor ($100 a year or $10 per month bank draft)
or rewarding members of your club with awards from the camp
(Life membership, Brick, Jack Weich Fellowship or Honorarium).

Wickersham Charitable Golf Tournament
The Harry Wickersham
Golf Tournament is in its 14th year, and is now a Memorial Tournament
in memory of Harry Wickersham. Since it began, the tournament has been

The 2006 Tournament was a huge success and raised $53,641.00 for the
children of Texas Lions Camp. Many people came together to make this
happen, but the tournament directors, Mac & Mary McCown, now have the
distinction of having managed the most successful tournament in TLC
history.
Tournament - 2007
The 2007 tournament will be held at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course in
Fredericksburg, Texas. As in prior years. The Tourney will "shotgun
start" at 8:00 a.m. on the Thursday prior to Board Day, or August 2,

Certified Guiding Lion Program
The Certified Guiding Lion program has proven to be an effective tool
for new club development. The course, which is available to any active
Lion member, may be taken individually at one's own pace or as a
course given by a facilitator. After completion of the course, the
Lion should meet with his or her District Governor, who will go over
the Certified Guiding Lion Course Review, a booklet completed by the
Lion. After the District Governor has signed the Review, the Review
should be forwarded to the New Clubs and Marketing Department. Upon
receiving the completed Review, the New Clubs and Marketing Department
will mail the Lion a special certificate noting the Lion's achievement
as a Certified Guiding Lion.
The comprehensive course provides insight of the skills needed to be a
successful Guiding Lion and acquaints the participant with detailed
knowledge of new club management, the roles and responsibilities of
new club officers, how to create a membership recruiting plan, and
"Making It Happen," Guide to Club Project Development. The course
material includes a suggested timeframe that outlines activities that
the club should achieve over the club's first two years.

Peace Poster Update...
WINNER!
WINNER! WINNER! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!
Of course all of our entries are winners!!
But, unfortunately we can only forward one poster to the International
level. I must say that these young people have great futures in art
ahead of them!! All of the entries were great and very hard to
judge!!!
The winning poster that was selected to move forward to the next level
was submitted by Lijia Yu, a 12 yr. old 8th grader from Knox Jr. High
in The Woodlands.
Lijia’s quote on Peace was “All countries can live and work together
in harmony amongst one another”. The club submitting the winning
poster is The Woodlands Lions Club out of 2S2 led by President Larry
Smith. Congratulation President Larry and Governor Margaret Badeaux!!!
We will continue to watch this entry and pray that it will win the
international level. Wouldn’t it be great to have the winner be from
our great state of Texas??!! Especially since we have a Texan as
President!!!
Thanks to all of you so much for allowing me to work with the finished
products of these great young people. I am still amazed at all of the
talent out there!
I hope that I am fortunate enough to work with this great program
again next year!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families!!

Message from IP Jimmy Ross
Dear Club Officer,
The coming year will be a very special one for Lions Clubs
International. Lions from all over the world are invited to "come home
to Chicago" for our 90th International Convention in July. There will
be many other celebrations and events marking our 90th anniversary
beginning with a special feature in an upcoming issue of The LION
magazine. Information on other events will be available throughout the
year at
www.lionsclubs.org.
Other parts of our association family will be celebrating significant
milestones as well. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of Leo
clubs, the 20th anniversary of the Peace Poster contest and the 20th
anniversary of women's participation as Lions club members. These
anniversaries will also be featured in The LION magazine and on the
Lions Clubs International Web site.
While we will be taking special note of the past in this year of
anniversaries, we will also be moving ahead with the new paradigm for
our organization. As part of this new paradigm, we are focusing
membership extension efforts on "target markets" that are
underrepresented in the association. Urban populations and the "baby
boomer" generation are two important examples.
But perhaps the most important group we can reach out to is young
people. It should be obvious to everyone that the youth of our
communities will be the Lions club members of the future. That is why
I am asking all Lions clubs throughout the world to consider
sponsoring a Leo club.
The association is placing great importance on Leo clubs in their 50th
anniversary year. In a letter to all Leo Club members throughout the
world (http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/youth_leo_convention.shtml)
I have invited them to come to Chicago and participate in a special
Global Leo Conference during our International Convention. I believe
that knowing that Lions Clubs International is dedicated to providing
activities and programs that are specially tailored to young people
will energize existing Leo clubs and be a powerful motivation for the
formation of new ones.
I hope that your club will also place great importance on Leos in the
coming year. The month of April has been designated as Leo Awareness
Month. I strongly urge you to show your members and your communities
what young people can accomplish by joining with a Leo club in your
area for a special service project in April.
You have my best wishes during this holiday season and for a joyful,
service-filled new year.
Sincerely,
Jimmy M. Ross
