Dr Bonita Lowrie
District Governor
The 2006-2007 year in Lionism will
be celebrated at the 66th District 2-S1 Convention at Hotel
Fredonia in Nacogdoches April 28, 2007.
Last May 2006, a cadre of twenty district leaders met for an all
day DreamWeavers Retreat for team-building and to lay the
general plans for 2006-2007. DreamWeavers will be honored at the
Convention Breakfast.
The DreamWeavers went forth to help other Lions become
DreamCatchers. The DreamCatcher pin is the most coveted District
2-S1 award for 2006-2007. It is a limited edition and cannot be
bought. The Convention Banquet will honor all "pinned"
DreamCatchers.
By the time of the District Convention, it is hoped that all
Lions in District 2-S1 will be DreamMakers for helping make
dreams come true for the less fortunate. The Convention Luncheon
will celebrate the fruits of our "We Serve" motto.
For the DreamMakers Luncheon, each club is asked to bring as
your honored guest a recipient of your humanitarian work. The
possible choices are too numerous to list; however, examples are
Recipient of scholarship, eyeglasses, hearing aid, food baskets

Fred
Renkema
Vice District Governor
It’s Great to be a Lion and Serve those in need of our services. It
was a learning experience to attend the Council of Governors meeting
in Kerrville and to meet at the Texas Lions Camp for their
Simi-annual Board Meeting.
The Governors meet and make decisions about Lionism in the State of
Texas. We want to thank Lion Dr. Bonita Lowrie for the excellent job
she is doing within our district and in representing our District
2-S1.
The Texas Lions Camp held their Board of Directors meeting and
discussed the business of running the large facility for those
children who attend each summer. It is such a pleasure to know that
we have a facility for handicapped children to attend.
I attended the region/Zone 3 meeting held in Beaumont and was really
enlightened with the things each club was doing and the progress
they were making in bringing new members into their clubs. Their
fundraising is an on-going event in each of their clubs. They had a
program presented to them that was very impressive and they are
considering how they can get involved and express Lionism with it.
I want to thank the Lions that went to Midland and went through the
vision screening training and certification. They were present at
the screening that was held in Beaumont at the Fletcher Elementary
School. I was there to help and was very impressed at the manner
that they were conducting the program. Each one was busy and
productive in helping the people. They screened about 63 people that
day and the people were excited about getting the Lions help.
Everyone had on their vest and what a way of letting the people know
who we are and that the “Lions are Here”. We look forward to doing
more screenings in the future. There is a great need. If anyone is
interested in learning about and getting certified to help, please
let me know.
There are other positions within the District that need to be filled
for this next year. If you are interested in helping, please let me
know.

White Cane Day 2007
White Cane Day 2007 to be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007. In an
effort to promote this year’s event on a large scale, we are asking
all clubs to participate on the scheduled day, if possible. White Cane
Day gives us a chance to collect much-needed funds for sight
restoration and conservation projects. It also gives the Lions a
chance to meet the public and tell our story.
We encourage you to secure your collection location (Wal-Mart, K-Mart,
grocery store, etc.) in advance of the event, and then make regular
follow-up calls to confirm your reservation. We have found in the past
that as retail managers move from store to store, the new managers
need this information on their calendar.
Please fill out the supply order form and fax to Alicen Swift at the
Lions Eye Bank of Texas at 713-798-6864 by Friday, March 2, 2007. It
is important that all clubs strive to meet this deadline, so we can
make sure enough supplies are ordered and that your supplies get to
you in a timely manner. If you should have any questions, please feel
free to contact me at 713-798-5545 or by e-mail at
alswift@bcm.edu.
White Cane Day contributions allow us to continue donor awareness
programs, community education and sight restoration projects
throughout the year. With your help, this year we will reach our goal
to exceed last year’s collections. If your club is unable to
participate, we encourage you to make a donation to the Lions Eye Bank
of Texas. On behalf of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas, we appreciate your
support of White Cane Day 2006.

ATTENTION CLUB PRESIDENTS:
It is not too early to begin thinking about the process for the
election of club officers for 2007-2008.
The time-line for appointing nomination committees, holding
elections (no later than April 15) and the timely submission of
Club Officers to Lions Clubs International (April 30) is vital to
the smooth transition from the 2006-2007 Year in Lionism to
2007-2008.
Each club president should inform the nomination committee of the
role and responsibilities of each club officer. Especially
critical to the success of the clubs operations is the office of
club secretary, the key liaison with Lions Clubs International.
If a new club secretary is being selected, the nominating
committee needs to consider a Lion who is computer savvy, willing
to attend the club secretary training provided by the district and
committed to keeping the club in good standing by submitting
complete and accurate reports to District 2-S1 and Lions Clubs
International.
If the club secretary selected is continuing in that office, it is
still important that they be willing to attend the club secretary
training. In a computer lab, experienced club secretaries can be
of great assistance to the trainer(s) by working one-on-one with a
novice Lions club secretary.
Go to

and review the General Procedural Guidelines for Club Elections.
Your leadership as Club President in the election process gives
you yet another opportunity to guide your club to excellence.

Insulin Therapy for Diabetics
By: Lauren Michalk
Insulin is a hormone in our body that is made by the pancreas. Every
time we eat our pancreas releases insulin to help the body use and
store glucose. Insulin is an important part of diabetes management.
Type 1 diabetics must take insulin because their pancreas is not
making it at all. Type 2 diabetics are making insulin but their body
is becoming resistant to it.
Sometimes type 2 diabetics can control their diabetes with diet and
exercise, but not always. It is important to remember that taking
insulin is not a failure. It can help prevent diabetes complications
by keeping your blood sugar under control.
There are different types of exogenous insulin. For example: long
acting, rapid acting, short acting, intermediate acting, and inhaled
insulin. Your doctor can help determine how your insulin therapy will
be administered.
Insulin is typically given in an injection form via a syringe, a pen,
or a pump. There is a new form of insulin that can now be inhaled.
Your doctor may prescribe a mixture of insulin types for your diabetes
management.
Insulin therapy should mimic our body’s natural insulin release
patterns. A basal dose of insulin (long-acting) may be administered
once or twice a day. Most likely at night to help keep your blood
glucose steady while you sleep. A bolus dose (short acting/rapid
acting) of insulin is administered typically at mealtime. This dose
will cover mealtime carbohydrates and correct current glucose levels.
Your doctor will consider different factors in determining how much
insulin you take including, what type of diabetes you have, how much
your blood sugar fluctuates, and your overall lifestyle.
Always make sure to follow the insulin therapy plan your doctor has
provided for you. Keep track of your blood sugar levels in a logbook.
This can be a helpful tool for your doctor if your blood sugars are
still running high. You may need to make adjustments to your insulin
therapy or your diet. Always call your doctor if you have questions. |

Leo Club Program Goal
2007 is an exciting year as it marks the Leo Club Program's 50th
Anniversary. To strengthen the Leo Club Program, the goal for
2006-2007 is for every district to have a net growth of at least one
new Leo club by June 30, 2007.
If you have already met this goal, I congratulate you and urge you to
continue to build Leo clubs in your district. If your district does
not have a Leo club, I urge you to form one. To start or expand the
Leo Club Program in your district, appoint a district Leo club
chairperson, if you have not already done so. During your club visits,
please be sure to encourage Lions to sponsor Leo clubs. District
governors and Leo club chairpersons of districts that achieve a net
growth of three or more Leo clubs by June 30 will each receive a
special Leo Club Extension Award certificate.
To help you in your efforts, the Youth Programs Department has created
new Leo Club Program materials, including a Leo Club Program Handbook.
The handbook provides valuable program information. To view and
download the handbook or other program materials, click the following
link to the Lions Web site:
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/resources_broch_youth.shtml.
Upon request, the Youth Programs Department will be happy to send you
a hard copy of the handbook.
If you need assistance, please contact me or the Youth Programs
Department at 630-571-5466, ext. 330 or by e-mail at
leo@lionsclubs.org. The Leo
Club Program is a great way to introduce new generations of young
people to service clubs. Let's work together to build Leo clubs in
your district!
Sincerely,
Jimmy M. Ross

What is HARP?
Is it a musical instrument? Sure, but when local Lion’s speak
about HARP, they’re talking about the Lions’ District 2S1 Hearing
Aid Recycling Project. Local Lions working in conjunction with
area Audiologists are collecting used hearing instruments for
recycling/refurbishing. These collected hearing aids are
redistributed to persons living in our district who cannot afford
them. Did you know that there are 30 million people with hearing
loss in the United States? That’s one in ten Americans. This means
that likely each one of us knows someone with a hearing problem.
The main reason many people who need a hearing instrument but
don’t use one is their high cost. The average hearing instrument
costs an average of $2000 per ear. HARP is currently accepting
applications from people who cannot afford new hearing
instruments. If approved, they will receive new or refurbished
hearing aids (depending on their hearing loss and the current
inventory). If you know someone who needs hearing instruments,
give them an application. Applications can be obtained from any
HARP trustee. Once an application is filled out, it should be sent
to the local club for approval. If the application is approved, it
should be forwarded to HARP. If approved, the client will receive
hearing instruments, and the local club will be billed $100 to
cover the costs of the fitting and dispensing of the instrument(s).
What can you do to help? Continue to donate money and used
instruments to HARP. Spread the word. Our greatest problem at the
time is the lack of knowledge in the community of Lions’ work with
the hearing impaired. Take any opportunity you get to speak to
others about this great Lions’ project in East and Southeast
Texas.

Women's Membership
Development & Participation
District 2S1 has reason to Celebrate in 2007. This is the year to
celebrate 20 years of Women in Lions Clubs. Our District continues to
grow with Women stepping up to the plate in Leadership roles and
contributing many hours of volunteer service. At our Mid- Winter
Conference we reported that our District is 16 plus in Women members,
making us third in the State. That is indeed a reason for celebration.
This figure continues to grow. The changes that Women bring to our
Clubs are positive and we should embrace this change.
We want to thank the Clubs in our District who have increased their
membership. Family Brochures are now available from Lions
International to help you involve families in a Lions Club and How
they can make a difference in the community. Get a supply of these
brochures and use them to increase membership.
We appreciate the "Men in Lions" who have given us the opportunity of
serving with them.

Texas Lions Camp Director's Report
We are still looking for campers for the 2007 camping season!
One of the topics discussed at the elected directors committee meeting
at the camp board meeting was the cost of a camper attending camp. The
cost per camper has been calculated at $1500, but camp is at “no
charge” to the camper. We the Lions of Texas are footing that bill, if
we sponsor 1000 or 1600 campers.
How better can we serve our community, than to sponsor a youth to the
Lions Camp? Find the child that is often rejected by other camping
organization due to special medical needs or physical limitations. It
is quite simple (but not easy) obtain the parents consent, obtain
signed medical report, sign the application and forward it to the camp
for review and assignment. We are asking campers to request session V.
Camper transportation has been an increasing cost and concern in the
recent years. The cost of tour coaches has risen drastically in the
past several years. The district is looking a car pooling with large
church vans and transportation for the luggage. I have asked several
of the clubs in different areas to check into the availably of vans.
After we start receiving assignment sheets from the camp, we will have
a better idea of the number of campers needing transportation and the
locations so we can establish the number of seats required and can
work on meeting locations. We are hoping to keep the cost per camper
below $80. The quoted price for a coach with 40 campers was $130 not
including food cost.
If you locate the campers, we (the district) should be able to arrange
for reasonable transportation.

Breakfast Lions Sponsor Bowling Tournament
For several years the Beaumont
Breakfast Lions Club has put on a Bowling Tournament to raise
funds for the charities they support. Club President, Robert
Blackburn has traveled to several meeting promoting this annul
event.
He said “I wish that we could get several teams in our District to
join this fun time.” The tournament is open to the public and has
been promoted on Channel 4. Proceeds from this tournament enables
our club to several things in our community like eye exams for
children, and others worthwhile endeavors.
This has been a fun time for our members as we get to share
Lionism with the general public.
We certainly do thank the management of the Crossroads Bowling
establishment for their cooperation in offering this tournament
each year.

Message from IP Jimmy Ross
There is no doubt about it. Today's families are busier than ever.
Technology allows parents to work harder and be more productive than
ever before. With school activities, athletic programs, art and music
instruction, children have more opportunities to grow and learn than
ever before. I have nothing but admiration for those who accept the
challenge of raising a family in this fast-paced environment.
But there can be a down side to all this activity: families just don't
spend enough time together as families. Some forget that there is more
to life than their own hectic schedules. Sometimes they even forget to
have fun. With family time at such a premium, it's easy to see why
young parents are reluctant to sacrifice any of it, even for the best
of purposes.
Lions Clubs can change all that. Through the Family Membership
Program, we can remind families that meaningful service to others is
more satisfying than an entire lifetime of conference calls, piano
lessons and soccer games. And we can remind them that serving together
is fun!
I am pleased to tell you that in January alone, 42 new family-oriented
clubs were chartered (with at least 25% of the charter members coming
in as family members) and that international headquarters has sent
more than 4,500 certificates recognizing Lions for their participation
in January inaugural kick-off activities.
This new wave of Lions Clubs and Lions Club members will be a
tremendous benefit for our communities and for our association. Our
communities will have countless more hearts and hands to serve their
needs and Lions Clubs will benefit from the new ideas and new energy
these members will bring. Perhaps most important, it helps ensure that
there will be a next generation of Lions prepared to step-up and
fulfill our motto - We serve.
I ask you to keep this new wave rolling by doing all you can to bring
family members into existing clubs and establishing new
family-oriented clubs.
One important way in which clubs can benefit from family members is by
establishing club branches. These branches provide the full benefits
of Lions Club membership while accommodating families and other groups
with convenient meeting schedules and activities focused on their
special interests. Consider extending full Lions membership to
Lionesses and "graduating" Leos by establishing club branches tailored
to their needs.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_branch.shtml
Please remember: people join - and stay with - organizations that meet
their needs. To be sure that clubs in your district are working to
meet the needs of these vital new members, please see
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_family.shtml and
view the video report on family membership in the January edition of
Lions Quarterly online magazine.
You can maximize the impact of new members on clubs and their
communities by taking part in Worldwide Induction Day on April 21. It
is an outstanding opportunity for recruiting and to make Lions
activities known throughout your district. Start planning your event
now by visiting
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_wwday.shtml.
Finally, I am also pleased to announce that I have reached my goal of
organizing 15 new Lions Clubs during my term as international
president. How are you progressing toward the goal of establishing at
least one new club in each district during this Lions year?
As always, I thank you for your dedicated service.
Sincerely,
Jimmy M. Ross

Informed About Used Eye Glasses They Collect
On
February 1, 2007, Lions Pat and Jennie Brady, members of the Port
Arthur Founders Lions Club presented a program on “What Happens To
That Pair Of Used Eyeglasses.
They received a CD in Midland, Texas after visiting the Multiple
District 2 facility earlier in the year known as TLERC, or Texas Lions
Eyeglass Recycling Center.
Members of the Breakfast Club were very impressed with the
presentation by Lion Brady. He answered several questions from the
membership concerning the use of the used eye glasses as they are
gathered and ready to be shipped, after traveling to the Midland TLERC
center, to other parts of the world when requested by Lions Clubs
International.
District Governor Dr. Bonita Lowrie appointed Pat Brady to represent
the District 2-S1 Eye Glass Recycling effort as requested by
International President Jimmy Ross.
Pat and Jennie Brady have been busy preparing containers for the used
eye glasses and have distributed several in the Port Arthur
Independent School District. He would like to see every club in the
District place containers in their communities such as schools,
nursing homes, funeral homes, churches, etc.
The month of March historically is a big month for the promotion for
Sight. Many Lions Clubs will be holding their “White Cane” sale at
this time. We would like for clubs to also make an extra effort to put
the collection boxes out for used eye glasses. We also collect used
hearing aids.
We also encourage the public to clean out the drawers that have the
outdated glasses and donate them to the Lions Clubs.
Pat is available for a program at your club. Please give advance
notice.
