Dr Bonita Lowrie
District Governor
The times, they are a-changin'!
In his inaugural speech last July in Boston, International
President Jimmy Ross called for a paradigm shift for the
2006-2007 year in Lionism.
His vision for Lions Clubs International to remain the world's
largest service organization necessitates change for changing
times.
That is not to suggest that we throw the baby out with the bath
water.
Since Helen Keller made her challenging speech in 1925, for
Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against
darkness," vision remains the primary focus of LCI.
However, many of the traditions and rituals are being shed to
adjust to the changing time-strapped membership.
Each club is autonomous and unique. Members join to fulfill
their own personal needs to give back to their communities and
to the larger global community. New clubs are developing
creative ways to carry out their service to humanity.
Leaders in District 2-S1 recently experienced the adrenalin rush
of assisting with the formation of three new clubs in District
2-S1. Colmesneil, Zavalla and MCT Tri-County exemplify the
uniqueness of communities and the flexibility necessary to keep
Lionism viable because
The times, they are a-changin'!

A-Changin' " at Carnegie Hall. )

Renkema
Vice District Governor
This has been a very active month being a Lion in District 2-S1. The
Leadership Conference held in Austin was a great learning
experience. There were many different areas of Lions Clubs brought
out by the presenters. The seminars were very interesting and
exciting so that we as leaders in Lionism can improve and promote
this service to those that need us.
Another wonderful experience was attending the International Board
of Directors Meeting in San Antonio. International President Jimmy
Ross let us experience the opening session of the meeting, the
social hour and the dinner following the meeting. We got to meet the
International Directors from all over the world. This was an
experience most of us will never be able to attend again.
What an experience our members in our district encountered when we
went into the communities of Colmesneil and Zavalla and recruited
enough members to start a new Lions Clubs in each of these
communities. Colmesneil has been organized and their charter
application has been sent to Lions Clubs International. Zavalla is
just a short time behind and will be organized the first week in
April. We look forward to having their charter night ceremonies in
May.
I want to personally thank each Lion that joined us and helped
recruit those two days. I also want to thank PDG Ed Stebbins and PDG
Beverly Stebbins for coming from Arlington to give us guidance and
help us with forming these new clubs.
Another exciting event was the formation of the MCT Tri County Lions
Club that is being formed in Nederland, Port Neches, Bridge City,
Orange and Lumberton. This is a unique club that is and example of a
business family club. We are excited about this club and would like
to thank PDG Moe Cully for his efforts in getting this club going.
Plans are progressing for the District Convention on April 27-28,
2007 to be held in Nacogdoches. I look forward to seeing each of you
there.
I want to thank each of you that have accepted a leadership position
for next year. I look forward to working with each of you to improve
Lionism in District 2-S1.
Lions Clubs theme for next year is “Challenge To Change”. We are
looking to help bring about change and improvement in Lions Clubs.
Yours in Lionism

Annual Spring Cleaning Can Unearth Treasured
Donations
By JAMIE REID, The Enterprise
03/16/2007
Updated 03/16/2007 01:03:10 AM CDT
[Excerpt from Beaumont Enterprise
http://www.beaumontenterprise.com]
Beaumont Breakfast Lions Club President Jared Wilson contributed to
article (used eyeglasses collection).
What: Eyeglasses
Who wants it: Lions Clubs around Southeast Texas
Where: Drop boxes are located in most local optometrists’
offices.
Hours: Optometrists’ hours
Call: A local optometrist.
What happens to them? The glasses go to Midland, where they are
cleaned and categorized by magnification. Some of them come back to
Southeast Texas for needy adults. Others may go overseas for children
who need glasses.
How much do the local Lions clubs collect in three months?
3,000-4,000 pair of glasses. (There are three Lions Clubs in Beaumont:
The Beaumont Breakfast Lions Club; the Beaumont Founders; and Beaumont
South Forest Park.)
Eyeglasses: Last year, Lions Club International collected about
30 million glasses, many of which went to developing countries and
enabled people to see clearly for the first time. While people in
these foreign countries often can’t afford an eye exam (if a doctor is
even available), the cost of recycling a pair of glasses is little as
8 cents, according to the Lion Club Web site.

Leader Dog Saves
Owner From Fire
Charlie
Robinson’s, 46 years old, is thankful to be alive to sip coffee and
pet his Leader Dog, Travis. “My roommate had made us a pot of coffee
and then went off to work,” said Robinson who lost his sight in June
1990 to a diabetes-related complication.
I turned on the electric space heater because it was cold and then
went into the kitchen for a cup of coffee”, he said.
“Travis came into the kitchen and was acting anxious and tapping his
paw on the ground to get my attention.” I walked into the living room
and smelled something burning. Robinson, a native of Detroit and who
has had five Leader Dogs counting Travis, said he went downstairs to
the basement and turned off the electrical power to the house.
“I then came back upstairs and unplugged the space heater. The space
heater melted and part of the carpet burned, but there was no need to
call the fire department.” He said. Randy Horn, a 30-year senior
instructor for Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, said he’s not
surprised.
Robinson called Randy Horn and said Travis is one cool boy and he
helped take care of the situation before it got hugely out of hand. He
saved the day.”
Randy Horn said, “dogs are chronic observers of people. They respond
based upon past experiences. As far as fire, earthquakes or someone
having a seizure, it’s just something innate that they can sense.
They’ve got a tremendous capacity to discern different odors.”
A Leader Dog or a service dog “takes responsibility for the person it
is assigned to,” Horn said. “They do something out of the ordinary
when something is wrong, so the human says, “What’s up? And
investigates.” “It’s a partnership based on trust and love.”
This is a true story.

Suspension/Cancellation of Clubs
Effective July 1, 2007, any club that has a 150 day past due
balance in excess of US$20 per member or US$1,000 per club which
ever is less, will be automatically suspended for 90 days by the
Resources Division.
A suspended club can regain its good standing status by paying the
entire account balance or accepting a payment plan during the
90-day suspension period. If a club does not pay this amount in 90
days, the club will be cancelled automatically.
Clubs can contact Melinda Plott, Credit Coordinator, at
melinda.plot@lionsclubs.org for more information on the payment
plan offered by the association.

Message from IP Jimmy Ross
This year Lions Clubs International will celebrate several significant
anniversaries including the 90th anniversary of our founding. These
celebrations will remind us that we must never lose sight of our most
treasured traditions and must always hold fast to the ancient values
which we hold dear.
But when it comes to the way we conduct our business, it is equally
important that the association stay as up-to-date as possible. In
2007, that means using the Internet and on-line resources to their
best advantage.
The number of clubs using the Lions Clubs International Web site to
file Monthly Membership Reports has been increasing steadily. This
year, we will be taking that one step further by making information
previously provided in printed Club President and Club Secretary Kits
available in the Club Resource Section of the association Web site (www.lionsclubs.org).
The only printed items we will be providing this year to all Lions
clubs are the C-3 Membership Cards. Preprinted Monthly Membership
Reports with LCI address labels will be sent only to those clubs who
are not filing their forms online.
I have reviewed the Club Resource Section and am happy to tell you
that it could not be easier to use. The team at international
headquarters has done an outstanding job in making the section clear,
concise and intuitive. It requires no special computer skills; even
the most inexperienced Internet novice will be able to navigate the
site with ease.
Making this information available online will not only conserve
natural resources, but will allow club officers easier, faster access
to more relevant information than ever before. Of course, not every
club has easy access to the Internet, so a printed version of a
combined Club Officers Kit will be available to clubs that request
them. Requests for the Club Officers Kit should be directed to the
English Language Department at international headquarters - e-mail:
english_language@lionsclubs.org, fax 630-571-1693 or phone
630-571-5466 x 654.
I invite you to visit
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/resources_clubs.shtml to see
for yourself how much information is available at the site and how
easy it is to use.
Children are our future, there is no doubt about it. But with more and
more Lions Clubs adopting a family-friendly format, children are
becoming an important part of our present! We should do all we can to
educate these children about Lions Clubs International and what it
means to be a Lion. What better way to do that than by engaging their
imaginations with a coloring book.
"The Pride of Lions - a Kid's Guide to Lions Clubs," now available
from the Club Supplies Division, is an exciting new recruitment and
membership tool. Scenes in the book depict Lions bringing food to and
companionship to those in need, building community projects and taking
part in other service activities - all with a friendly lion character
overseeing the work. "The Pride of Lions" coloring book is
approximately 18 inches by 23 inches and contains more than 30 pages
of activities.
The books can be distributed at community events, presented to
prospective members with young children and given to those children
who already are part of your Lions Club family.
Order yours today and give your littlest future Lions a gift they will
remember for the rest of their lives. For more information and to
order call (800) 710-7822 or order online at
http://www2.lionsclubs.org/LionsClubsSuppliesStore
As always, thank you for your service to your club and your community,
Jimmy M. Ross
International President
Reminder!!! New Payment Rules go into effect July 1, 2007 Effective
July 1, 2007, clubs with past due balances beyond 150 days, equal to
as little as one per-capita, could cause the club to be placed on
automatic suspension and automatic cancellation within 90 days.
Protect your club's good status by continuing to send payments on
time.
Currently, some clubs could be in jeopardy of becoming inactive if
past due balances are left unpaid as follows:
. Balances unpaid beyond US$1000 and over 90 days, could be placed on
status quo, unless payments are received between now and June 30, 2007
. Second semester 2006 per-capita must be paid prior to May 31, 2007.
This is necessary in order to maintain a good status.
Protect your active status by sending payments on a timely basis. If
you have any questions about your clubs payment status please contact
Lions Clubs International at
districtadministration@lionsclubs.org or
treasurer@lionsclubs.org.
They will be happy to assist you.
